HALL OF GREAT AMERICANS
There is seemingly a “Hall of Fame” for everything these days. Of course there is the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and then there are Hall of Fames for cowboys, firemen, and not to mention for dozens of other occupations. And lest one forget, practically every organized sport has one. Even the Barbie doll has her own Hall of Fame.
But few have ever heard of the first American Hall of Fame. The one that begat all the others. The Hall of Fame for Great Americans is now all but forgotten, but decades ago it was the high watermark in honoring the achievements of individual American citizens. Its recipients were as highly regarded as Nobel Peace prize winners. Newspaper columnists and ordinary folks argued passionately about worthy nominees. There were also concerted and organized efforts made by groups and organizations to get their favorites into it.
It was so much in the American consciousness, even the movie Wizard of Oz referenced it, “You will be a bust, be a bust, be a bust in the Hall of Fame!” sing the Munchkins to Dorothy.
The Hall of Fame for Great Americans actually even has a physical location which is situated on the campus of Bronx Community College in University Heights. There behind the campus’ main library is a stately 630-foot open-aired arched colonnade. Its location is appropriate for such an honor for it is the highest natural point in The Bronx and one of the highest in the entire city. Perhaps even more symbolically, it is also the area where the British Army camped during occupation then were subsequently run out by then General George Washington in 1776.
